Green Machine End of the Year Update - June 2023

6/5/2023

An update on the 2022-2023 school year for Doc Nix and the Green Machine

Doc Nix and the Green Machine had a great 2022-2023 school year rocking out at basketball games in EagleBank Arena and at performances throughout the community! The pep band performed for every women’s and men’s home basketball game, as well as traveled to each teams’ conference tournament in March. The band performed for two games at the University of Delaware for the Women's Basketball A10 Conference Tournament and two games at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn for the Men’s Basketball A10 Conference Tournament. We are incredibly proud of both teams and can not wait to support both teams again next fall!

One of the highlights of our year was having the opportunity to perform at the White House for the annual Easter Egg Roll. This was at the invitation of the federal government the band’s third performance this year for the United States Department of Education!

We are excited to unveil a new sound system for the band during the Fall 2023 semester. The purchase of a state-of-the-art Allen & Heath/QSC sound system was made possible thanks to Green Machine donors during Mason Vision Day and the Season of Giving!

In 2022, Doc Nix and Dr. Matthew Dievendorf applied for Anti-Racist Inclusive Excellence seed funding from the Provost’s Office to start a new program called Anti-Racist Collaborative Arts at Mason (ARCAM). This program involves collaborations with several faculty and staff members from CVPA and the School of Integrative Studies. We are happy to report that the project was awarded $50,000! Work has already started on creating a range of programming for the 2023-24 academic year, and ARCAM has already supported events staged this semester. Keep an eye on our social media accounts for announcements of upcoming events!

Doc Nix was recently involved with two amazing guest artist events on campus. On April 26, Doc was able to collaborate on a performance with breath artist/beatboxer, Dominic “Shodekeh” Talifero. Then on April 27, ARCAM co-produced and Doc facilitated a screening and Q&A with Boots Riley, the visionary filmmaker responsible for the 2023 series, I’m A Virgo.

On May 7th, the Green Machine hosted its annual band banquet and VIP reception. This year, the events were hosted in the Johnson Center’s Dewberry Hall and Cinema. It was so great being able to unite the various ensembles, honor our students, and thank our donors!

We can not wait for next school year. If you have any questions about joining the band or are interested in any of our upcoming performances, please feel free to email us at greenmachine@gmu.edu.
