"Close to the Sun," GMUID's 2021 visual EP
In the face of adversity with the COVID-19 pandemic, the George Mason University Indoor Drumline (GMUID) pivoted to an entirely online season for 2020-21. The program admin created a virtual technique program, offering a world class education to students of any skill level around the world. The program was made up of clinics and educational videos designed to teach technique and a wide array of skills.
In addition to creating their virtual education program, the GMUID staff also created a virtual performance for the Winter Guard International (WGI) eShowcase. The eShowcase was held this year in lieu of any in person competitions out of an abundance of caution.
There were 65-70 GMUID staff and students involved in this initiative. This project was completely remote, with all participants filming themselves and submitting their videos to be edited together into the amazing visual EP “Close to the Sun”. Click here to watch the stunning masterpiece!
GMUID is hoping to be in person next year with live performances. Given the success of this year’s virtual project, they may continue to have a small ensemble work on video produced performances as a continued offering to their season.
